A Winter Capsule Wardrobe

A Winter Capsule Wardrobe

I know, I know, we are already well into Winter. But since I participated in Dressember all of last month, I had to break my capsule rules a little bit and hadn't finalized my Winter capsule until January. BUT I wanted to share it with you all because a.) I'm super excited about it and b.) I've learned a few tips on capsuling that I want to pass on!

If you're thinking of creating a capsule wardrobe, be sure to check out my Fall capsule where I laid out a step-by-step guide. (Post one, post two) And if you're still in the de-cluttering phases, I wrote a post about ways to simplify your closet that you don't want to miss!

This time around I decided not to include shoes, because I'm not really a shoe person, so I really only have 3-4 pairs that I wear each season and am not tempted to go overboard. I include tops, bottoms, dresses and outerwear in my capsule this time for a grand total of 23 pieces.

Tops: 11

Orange V-Neck (H&M), White basic top (Kohls), Basic Green top (Mine is Stitch Fix, similar), Striped top (H&M),  Chambray Button Down (Target), Polka Dot Flannel (JCPenny), Red Flannel (Mine is thrifted, similar), Green Cardigan (H&M), Burgundy Sweater (H&M),Cream Cardigan (mine is old, similar), Tribal Cardigan (F21)

Bottoms: 6

Dark Denim (H&M), Green Skinnies (mine are from Pac Sun years ago, similar), Distressed Denim (Kohls), Bodycon Skirt (Forever 21), Embroidered skirt (mine is from Stitch Fix, similar), Black Leggings (Kohls)

Dresses: 3 (one not pictured)

Sweater dress (Target), Black Dress (Target) Tan Sweater Dress (F21)

Outerwear: 3

Green Parka (similar), Grey Waterproof Jacket (The North Face), Wrap Coat (mine is from Forever 21, similar)

After putting this one together, here are my tips:

  • Recycle your pieces! Most of these items I already owned and used in my Fall capsule. I purchased a few new things (Yay for Christmas money!) that I didn't already have.
  • Have a color scheme in mind before you buy any pieces. I stuck to neutrals- mostly tan, black, army green, grey and burgundy.
  • Plan out exactly what you need so that you don't buy extras or end up missing something (I highly recommend Un-Fancy's wardrobe planner and her whole blog in general if you're thinking about creating a capsule!)
  • Have a number in mind before you create it, but be flexible. You may decide to include a few more or a few less pieces than you originally thought- but thats ok!
  • For me, choosing basic pieces is the way to go. They're easy to wear and can be remixed with accessories (like this scarf!) to add a little variety.

I'm curious, would you ever, or have you already created a capsule wardrobe? I would love to hear your experiences with it!

Does the thought of starting a capsule wardrobe stress you out? Are you hesitant to get rid of clothes you already own? Let me do the dirty work for you and help you design a capsule wardrobe you'll love!
